As a young Gen Z individual, I am always eager to explore new experiences and step beyond my comfort zone. I strongly believe that growth begins where comfort ends. With that mindset, I made a conscious decision to improve my English communication skills to a higher level not just for academic success, but to shape my personality, confidence, and future career opportunities.
This decision led me to join the Gavel Club of the University of Ruhuna. At first, it felt like stepping into an entirely new world. Being surrounded by individuals who were confident, fluent, and expressive in English was both inspiring and intimidating. However, instead of feeling discouraged, I saw it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge myself.
I have been an active member of the club since last year, and during this time, I have taken part in many valuable and unforgettable experiences. Each meeting, each speech, and each interaction has contributed to my personal development. One of my long standing desires was to try English announcing. Although I had no prior experience, I always admired those who could confidently host events and engage audiences.
That dream became a reality last January at the Gavel Club Christmas Celebration. I was given the opportunity to host the entire event alongside my batchmate. At first, I felt nervous and uncertain, but as the event progressed, my confidence grew. Standing in front of an audience, speaking in English, and guiding the flow of the program was an incredible experience. That moment became a major milestone in my journey, proving to myself that I am capable of achieving things I once thought were beyond my limits.
In addition to that, being a member of the EDU team has been a truly rewarding experience. It has given me the chance to connect with senior students and faculty members, creating a strong and supportive network. These interactions have not only improved my communication skills but also broadened my perspective on learning and personal growth.
Participating in EDU meetings regularly has played a significant role in improving my English speaking abilities. It has helped me identify my weaknesses, correct my mistakes, and continuously refine my skills. More importantly, it has taught me the value of consistency and practice. Improvement does not happen overnight it is the result of small, consistent efforts over time.
The Gavel Club is not just a place to learn English, it is a family. A family that encourages, supports, and uplifts each other. Through this journey, my confidence has gradually increased, and I have become more comfortable expressing my thoughts and ideas. I have learned to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process rather than fear them.
Step by step, experience by experience, I am slowly transforming into the person I once dreamed of becoming. This journey has taught me that success is not about big, sudden changes, but about small, consistent improvements. Every speech delivered, every role taken, and every challenge faced has shaped me into a better communicator and a more confident individual.
And this is only the beginning.
I know there is still a long way to go, many more challenges to face, and countless opportunities to explore. But now, I move forward with confidence, courage, and a clear belief in my potential. The journey of self;improvement is ongoing, and I am excited to see where it will take me next.
