As a newcomer to the University of Ruhuna, I’m very excited to be a member of the Gavel Club! I’m here to build my confidence in public speaking and connect with others who share a passion for self-improvement. I’ve always believed in the power of communication, and joining Gavel is a step toward sharpening my skills while learning from others. I’m looking forward to growing alongside fellow members and contributing to the supportive and inspiring environment that Gavel offers.
At the beginning, when I joined the Gavel Club, there were many Zoom meetings every Saturday, and I joined whenever I could. There were many events during the two-hour sessions, and my favorites were the “Round Robin” and “Table Topic” sessions. Even though I joined these meetings, I didn’t have the confidence to unmute my mic and speak in English. In those days, I would just log in without saying anything.
However, I had a strong desire to speak in English, and I admired how confidently our seniors spoke. They had their own unique styles of communication, which I found inspiring. I looked up to them and thought that next time, I would try to speak. That decision marked the beginning of a significant change in my life.
On the 23rd of November 2024, the Gaveliers celebrated the 10ᵗʰ year of Gavel excellence at Matara Beach. Unfortunately, due to some reasons, I was unable to join the event. I also missed my second chance to participate. So, I patiently waited for my next opportunity to interact with senior members, speak in English, and build new bonds with them.
My next chance finally arrived with the “Roll the Dice, Rule the Room” event at the Medical Faculty with the J’pura Gaveliers. On that day, there were many enjoyable games and events, and I participated in all of them. I also spoke with all the members who attended that day. It was a joyful and happy experience for me, as it was the first time I physically interacted with them.
After that, December, the Christmas month arrived, and Siyumi akka, Kaweetha akka, Selanka ayya, and others organized the Gavel Christmas Party at the Medical Faculty. I was a committee member for the event, which took place on the 21st of December 2024. On that day, my senior friends and I decorated the Christmas tree and set up other decorations. After completing the decorations, we organized events, played games, and enjoyed refreshments together.
That day was extra special because we interacted and connected with each other more than on any other day. I even made new friends. I think it was one of the most memorable and wonderful days of my life.
At the end of my new journey, I would like to thank Gavelier Siyumi, the President of the Gavel Club, and all the other members for helping me turn a new page in my life.
However, the celebrations don’t end here! The Gavel Club is planning to organize more events in the new year, ensuring even more joy and excitement. As they celebrate this significant milestone, one thing is crystal clear, Gavel Never Stops.
